Building up a story Y3

To write a good story opening
We looked together at a painting of Neptune and some web pictures of underwater kingdoms.
We discussed how to open a story:- grabbing the reader's interest so that they want to read on
To describe a setting - use of exciting vocabulary
The next day we discussed underwater settings and how the children could use their senses to help descriptions.
To develop a character
The following day we decided which of the characters- Neptune, a diver, a mermaid or a merman ,we should develop. We needed to think about their appearance and their personality.

Adventure Stories by Year Three

The children of Year Three are all huge fans of Doctor Who and in English one day we started to think about what it would be like to time travel in the Tardis. As the school had recently celebrated our 40th Birthday, we began to imagine what the school would be like forty years into the future...
Read our adventure stories to find out what we envisaged.

Making Photograph Frames

KICX2859.JPG
Once upon a Design Technology lesson, Year Three made some fantastic photograph frames for our Valentines. We were so pleased with ourselves as they looked so impressive until...
KICX2860.JPG
Mrs. Armstrong said that they couldn't possibly be photograph frames because they wouldn't stand up on their own. They did not have a stand you see! Oh, no!
KICX2861.JPG
So we thought for a while to generate some ideas. We all thought of some winning designs.
KICX2862.JPG
We selected three pupils to tell us about their ideas.
KICX2863.JPG
We had to do a spot of problem solving. How could we create a stand? What materials would we use? This boy was successful with a triangular arrangement of cardboard. Hurrah for him!
KICX2864.JPG
This pupil suggested a rolled arrangement made from cardboard. The frame just rolled over. He went back to the drawing board.
KICX2865.JPG
Here were three clear successes!
KICX2867.JPG
Look, Mum - no hands! Yes we could create photograph frames that would stand on their own!
KICX2868.JPG
More fabulous frames!
KICX2869.JPG
And more!
KICX2870.JPG
And yet more!
KICX2871.JPG
Now our next problem was to decide who to send our 'Valentine Photograph Frames' to!

Samples of Our Writing

This term, the children of Year Three have been busy adding more detail and flair into their writing. Samples of their writing have been selected and typed up for your enjoyment. More will appear as the year processes and by the end of the year we hope all the children will have some of their work featured on our website.

We have been learning in Science lessons how plants can grow to be healthy specimens, how seeds germinate and what are the causes of unhealthy or stunted growth. These pieces of writing include some of the observations we have made in our investigations.

Welcome to Year Three

Welcome to Year 3. Although the move from Key Stage One to Key Stage Two is made easier because we are one school, the transition is nevertheless quite a big step. There are new routines to establish and for the first term the children may find the day seems very very long, especially because we don’t break for lunch until 12.15 and we have no afternoon playtime. I hope that your child will soon feel very much ‘at home’ in Year 3.
So far the class have been a delight – a super set of enthusiastic and eager pupils who seem to have settled alongside the older students quite naturally.
I do wish your child has a happy and successful time in Year 3 and great fun learning.

Mrs J Armstrong
