Visit to see Santa & Fenwick's Window (AM)

The pm children from Nursery had a fantastic visit to see Santa at Fenwick's in November 2011. We had a ride on a Metro train and a long climb up the stairs to get to Santa's grotto. The children enjoyed themselves so much!

Many thanks to all the parents and grandparents who helped support the children on the visit...we couldn't have had the visit without you!

If you enjoyed the Animoto, we would love you to leave a comment in the comments box below.

Guinea Pigs visit our Nursery.

We had a special visit from Sparkle and Heidi, Amy's guinea pigs on Wednesday 9th November.
We watched them as they played in their hutch and we had a cuddle and a stroke too.
We put a towel on our laps to keep us clean and made sure we washed our hands afterwards.

Strawberry & Wine Concert

What a performance, what a show... the sound of sweet music drifted through the school. We had solo performances to an orchestral finale, with harmonious performances in between. Every child played and sang with ease and confidence to a delightful audience.

At times the concert brought a tear to the eye, especially when one of our Nursery children played the violin.

Thank you and well done to all who performed, and to all who came and supported.

Goodbye Chicks...

We are all very sad in Nursery today, as it is our last day with the chicks. Most of the chicks will go to the farm where they will have even more fun running round outside. Daisy and  Eggy will have a different home as they are going to Jonathan's farm. We are pleased because Jonathan will be able to keep us up to date on how the chicks are doing! We all  have egg-stremely happy memories of the egg sellent  times with the chicks. If you would like more information about the 'Ready Hatch Programme' you can do so by clicking on the following link - Living Eggs.

Super Chicks!

 Day 10 - Wednesday 18th May

We are all chick egg-perts in Nursery, enjoy the video of our first cuddle with the chicks.

Even more chick facts...  Hatching: At hatching the chicks break a lid off the egg (at the blunt end) by pushing out with their beak. Chicks have a lump on their top beak called an "egg tooth" to help them break the shell out. The egg tooth falls off soon after hatching.

Chicks can take from 1 hour to 24 hours to hatch. Breaking out of the shell is called "pipping."

Brooding: Brooding is the name given to caring for chicks after hatching until they can fend for themselves. Brooding needs to provide warmth, ventilation, feed, and water. A brooder can be as simple as a cardboard box and a desk lamp with a 60 watt bulb for warmth.  Don't forget to leave a comment please.

Chirpy, Chicky, Cheeky chicks!

Day 9 - Tuesday 17th May

We had fun choosing names for the chicks, they are called Daisy, Minnie, Chicky, Rose, Cheepy, Beaky, Eggy, Sleepy, Funny, Lucky and Chirpy. They are egg-cellent  little runners, and love being stroked on their back or tummy. Hope you like the photographs of our first cuddle. Remember you can click on any photo to enlarge it.

nursery chicks20.jpg nursery chicks21.jpg nursery chicks22.jpg nursery chicks23.jpg nursery chicks24.jpg nursery chicks25.jpg nursery chicks26.jpg

Can you guess who it is holding each chick?

More chick facts : Incubation: Eggs that are bought from a supermarket are infertile and cannot be hatched. Only fertile eggs (from hens that have been covered by a rooster) can produce chicks.
Eggs are hatched naturally under a hen or artificially in an incubator. An incubator supplies warmth, humidity and ventilation to ensure a successful hatch. In an incubator, eggs are turned for 18 days, then left stationary for the last 3 days. Mother hen does the same with her eggs.

Chicken run!

Day 8 - Monday 16th May

The chicks have grown over the weekend and are much bigger now, also they have started to flap their wings as they jump and run around. Some of the chicks look egg-sactly the same, and they are much stronger now so we can hold them and give them a cuddle for longer.

Here are a few chick facts, did you know that...
. . . not all chicks are yellow
. . . chicks can be heard chirping in their shells up to 24 hours before hatching
. . . chicks do not need feed and water for up to 48 hours after hatching
. . . chicks start to grow feathers in the first week
. . . chickens eyelids close from the bottom up
. . . brown/black chicks come from dark shelled eggs
. . . chicks have an "egg tooth" on the top of their beak to break open the shell

Don't forget to leave a comment about the chicks!

Nursery chicks are egg-stremely cute!

Day 5 - Friday 13th May

What a great day! We can hold and gently stroke the chicks for the very first time, we were a little nervous but soon got used to it. The chicks were fluffy and egg-stremely cute. To allow the rest of the school see the chicks, they visited our whole school assembly. The chicks were on show in their brooder box in the hall, so now they have even more followers.

Day 4 - Thursday 12th May

The chicks are in the brooder box now and getting lots of egg-sercise. They are all running around having a good time. They soon get tired though and snuggle up beside each other under the light to fall asleep. It won't be long before the children can hold the chicks and give them a cuddle.

Nursey Toddle 2011

It was a cold, damp, foggy, miserable day today!

nursery toddle 004-1.jpg

But don't worry... Nursery children along with parents, grandparents and helpers soon cheered it up when they did their Annual Toddle.
Another year, another Toddle. They set off with great pace, everyone smiling and in good spirits (despite the weather). Once, twice, that walk was nice, then it was back to Nursery to rest those tired little feet and legs. Unfortunately it was still a cold, damp, foggy miserable day, but everyone was cheerful, happy and pleased they had all made it!

Infact it was so good, we did it all over again with the afternoon children and parents, and yes, the weather was still cold, damp, foggy and miserable!!

Dentist Appointment... next customer please!

Nursery children had a special appointment with Dentist Alison Collins, from Whickham Dental Practice. She showed the children the correct way to clean their teeth and told them when to clean them. Alison also gave advice on what food is good for your teeth and what food is bad for your teeth. The children took it in turn to practice on Mr Beaver.

Happy Pancake Day

Mrs O'Neill used her very own secret recipe to make delicious pancakes for the children to celebrate Pancake Day. The children could choose a lemon, golden syrup or honey topping.

After a while the sweet smell of cooking drifted throughout school and it wasn't long before Mrs Maitland popped into Nursery to find out what it was.

The children took turns to sit at the table and enjoy the scrumptious pancakes. Mrs Maitland couldn't resist and had to have one too!

Police arrest Nursey Children!

Today Police made an unexpected visit to Nursery. Police Officers had a long talk with the children, and then suddenly out of the blue, children were handcuffed and taken to a police van...

Can you believe it?  Take a close look at the photographic evidence below and then decide.

police van1.jpgpolice van2.jpg

Only joking, this is what really happened... Police officers Toni and Glen came to see the Nursery children. They had a little chat, then let the children try the handcuffs, helmet and bullet proof vest. The children were allowed to see the Police van, listen to the very loud siren and see the flashing lights. As an extra treat all of the children had a turn to sit in the van. Everyone had a brilliant time! The children gave a huge thank you to the police officers who unfortunately had to go back to work.

Nursery is alive with the sound of Music!

Dr Brendon Renwick came to school over several weeks to help Nursery children make a "Musical Discovery". He brought a range of musical instruments, including soft toys and other appealing items. The children joined Brendon enthusiastically, in a variety of tasks with the instruments, to make them aware of the different characteristics of sounds. The children watched and listened intensily to several peices of music and assorted sounds.

They all enjoyed learning high and low notes, long and short sounds, body sounds and combining other sounds like metal, wooden and plastic. They also discovered loud and quiet singing along with loud and quiet sounds. What clever little musicians we now have in Nursery. If you would like to discover other aspects of music, please visit the following webiste. Musicforschools

Quick as a flash in came Dash !

As well as our Nursery animal encounters, we had another visitor to Nursery last week. See if you can guess what it is, here are some clues to help you...  It has four legs, but no teeth. It lives on land, but some could live in water. It lives in a shell and for a very very long time. Its name is Dash and it belongs to Benjamin. Have you guessed yet ?

Thought you would get it right ! Take a look at Dash having a great time in Nursery.
